New Victory Images!

Greetings everyone!

Since August 19, 2007, World of Solitaire has shown the following picture when you win:

Being over 7 years old, that image is looking pretty dated!

It's time for something new!

Over the past several months I have been working with over 20 artists. Each artist has created one or more 'Victory' images for World of Solitaire.

Now when you win, you will be shown a random victory image. There are over 25 different victory images and some of them appear less often than others. Some are quite rare indeed!

If you do not want to see the new victory images, simply go to the 'Options' menu at the top and select 'Classic Victory Image'. Starting after your next deal, any future wins will show the classic victory image above instead of the new ones.

I hope everyone enjoys the new victory images and I hope everyone has a lot of fun! :)

Not sure where else to post this... I've noticed recently that the 'restart current game' command behaves differently now.

I only play spider solitaire, so I'm not sure if this affects other game types.

The option to restart current game would take you back to the initial layout, but leave the timer intact, so you didn't get a 'free' reset.

Now the timer resets to zero. Is this a deliberate change? I've gotten used to the previous behavior, and I prefer it.

This is on Firefox, on Windows 8.1.

The new victory caught me off guard and was a fun surprise! So colorful it gives me a smile. Only seen one so far and will enjoy it if they rotate for the same game. Thank You.

Very cute.

Thank you for the fun update - and for keeping this going. I use this as a sort of 'palate cleanser' - but for my brain. You are doing a great public service!

Thank you all very much for the comments! I am glad you like the them!

Robert said...

@Unknown: I just updated the game a few minutes ago, now The Restart Current game option won't reset the timer. This brings it back to behaving as it used to do.

If there is no more moves let the player know, & also make it if you want to change Background you have to click on Cards, Background. Other wise I love this game.

Hello, Long Long Long time player, first time posting. Love the new VICTORY changes, what a nice surprise. When I was at a boring dead end job your game got me thru the day. I am now a full time Grandma, and College Student, so I have less time to play but still love it, and now teaching my 5 year old grandson to play. Thank you so much for your games!

Robert, I so enjoy your world of solitaire games. I am disabled and it's hard for me to sit at my desktop computer. Is it possible to download your game so I can play on my laptop while I sit in bed? thanks so much for the enjoyment. You deserve a lot of praise for your creation. - Evi from Arizona

What a surprise when up popped a new victory sign! Made me smile. Have used this as a stress reliever for a long time. Thank you for adding some real personality to it!

Kudos to you and your collaborating artists for the wonderful and fun victory images.

They add a delightful dimension to an already excellent and well executed site.

Many, many thanks.

Everyone, very glad to hear you are all enjoying the new victory images!
It brings a smile to my face :)

@imbedsore: You can go to the 'Options' menu at top and choose 'Menu Requires Click To Activate" to make it so the menu only opens if you click on it. As for an offline version, there is an offline/downloadable version available in the Solitaire->About World of Solitaire menu.

Woah! Just got a rare one with a crab helping out to spell "You Win." Sweet ♥

Love the new Victory Images! But the regular solitaire hasn't had the "automated" card feature anymore, not even at the end. It
is a bit tedious to put every card away myself.

Robert said...

@Anonymous:
The 'automated' feature is still there and should still work. Go up to the 'Options' menu and ensure that 'Auto Play Obvious' or 'Auto Play When Won' is selected. That should fix it :)

Very happy with the new "Victory" banners when I win! They're so colorful and make me feel rewarded. Thanks for the update!

Anonymous said...

I've seen 25 different "victory, you win, etc." images.
Are there more being added?

Robert said...

@Anonymous: Yes, I have added a few more and will be adding more in the future :)

Love the new victory images, was quite a surprise when I saw the first one, now I make sure I wait to see which one it will be! Thanks for all your work Robert

I am really enjoying the new victory graphics! I haven't counted how many of the new graphics I've actually had pop up yet, but I do still occasionally see a new one--and it makes me smile, as one Anonymous said. I'm always surprised to see updates to this site, and can't thank you enough for your efforts. World of Solitaire has been my go-to for several years: to wake up; to wind down; to just take a break, and so many more to's!

Thanks for coming up with so many new images!

Love them -- how cute!!

What determines how many moves there can be in CRUEL? Sometimes it stops after only 7 moves, sometimes after 69...

Robert said...

@jo: On World of Solitaire every hand dealt is entirely random so how far you can get in Cruel tends to be down to just a luck factor. I hope I understood your question correctly.

Love the new graphics!!!!!!

You might consider creating a section where the player can view all the victory signs s/he has won -- and how many they have yet to win -- allowing a player to endeavor to collect them all.

I love, love, love the clever new graphics. My job is super stressful and World of Solitaire helps me relax at the end of a long day. Now I look forward to seeing all the different emblems (and the holiday graphics in the bottom corner are adorable). Thanks for your wonderful site. Very classy.

Best solitaire site on the web. Have enjoyed playing so much. Thank you

LOVE, Love, LOVE the Victory graphics! Thank you for the updates! I think I just got a 'new' one - red and gold shield. Thank you! -Jennifer

Most of the new graphics are cool, but a handful could be eliminated.......... any way to maybe in the future select which ones you want to see and don't??

Unknown said...

would be nice if one could pick one to get.

I love all the new graphics. I just got several brand new ones. Keep them coming. I really look forward to seeing new ones. I just say the most recent one, a wild looking fanged metal helmet saying WINNER in gold. Very unusual. Keep the creativity coming, Robert, and thanks for Wold of Solitaire! <3

Love watching to see which image I will get, just more fun. THANKS!!!

Your site is the best! I love the graphic images for victory. Sure hope you will continue to add more. Really get tired of the jester and row of symbols which are displayed at your first win in a series. However, your site is still better than any one else. Very easily viewed, and you can remove the ads! Keep up the good work and thanks.

Hey Robert. Who'd a thunk Solitaire could change the world :)

In the spring of 2013 I hadda heart transplant and post transplant, while I waited for things to heal up I played a ton of Solitaire on your site.

As it turns out the transplant and the associated downtime seemed to be perfectly timed for me to spend my waking hours on spiritual pursuits as well as physical healing and so I listened to hundreds of hours of online books and teachings and documentaries.....all while I was playing and enjoying Solitaire on your site.

I'm quite content not knowing exactly how these things are meant to play out but I do know that it would have been very difficult to put the time into recovery and soul-researching if I didn't have the comfort of your website to look forward to every day......which in the big picture is quite interesting :)

I can safely say I'm past the cliche that "It's the little things that matter." :)

I've been away from the site for a while and I just won a game and had the pleasant surprise of fireworks and CONGRATULATIONS! after the win which was a lot of fun :)

Thanks for doing what you do :)

@Jamie:

Thank you very much for your personal and touching comment. It's super awesome that you enjoy my website and that it was helpful to you during a difficult time.

I hope you continue to have fun playing :)

Hi!
I really enjoy your game, and the graphics. I kept a list for a time, and then saw that they accumulated. But the machine dropped all of them a few minutes ago, and I am back to my list! I have seen all the common ones and even a few of the rare. Wish there was a way to keep them better.

Robert said...

@Anonymous:

By "keeping them" if you mean it remembering which ones you saw, it should be doing this automatically and it shouldn't miss any. If you are a registered user, and you ensure you are logged in when you play, it will always remember which ones you have seen. You can click the 'Register' link at the top right. It's totally free and I never ever share your e-mail or e-mail you. If you are not registered, then which ones you have seen is tied to what is called a 'browser cookie'. Some browsers or anti-virus software or other programs might clear these browser cookies periodically. When that happens I am no longer able to identify you and thus you are considered a new user and are shown a reset list of victory images.

Hi, Robert, I'm a fan of the game and the tallying of the Victory Images, but the way you describe the probabilities is potentially confusing. You say that the RARE images have a 13.6% chance of appearing. There are 9 of these, so if each has an equal chance within this category, then each of these individual images has a 13.6/9 chance, or 1.51% chance of appearing. The UBER RARE category has a 4.2% chance of being used, but there are only 3 images in this set. This means that the chance of any of these images appearing is 4.2/3 = 1.4% chance of appearing. The difference between 1.51% and 1.4% for individual images seems too small to deserve the distinction between RARE and UBER RARE. More generally, I bet there's some confusion about the listed probabilities (chance of getting something within a set) and what people may care more about, the chance of seeing a particular image. Like my personal favorite, the Superb Owl. Obviously this is a very minor point in a great game!

@Maryellen

Hello

First some good news!

I'm working on a HUGE update to World of Solitaire. Part of this update includes the ability to 'exclude' victory images you've seen from appearing again. This will make it much more likely to get your favorite Superb Owl, by excluding the other images you've seen in the Uber Rare category :)

Second, I've modified the chances in the upcoming update with increased odds of Uber Rare and Mythic images to appear. It will be 9.7% for Uber Rare and 0.5% for Mythical.

As for how the victory images are chosen, here is how it will work in the upcoming update.

First thing I do is determine which "Category" of images the victory image will be chosen from.

To do this I start with the rarest Mythic category and work my way up.

For each category I pick a random number between 1 and X. X is different per category. If I get the number 1, then that is the category that is used as the pool of images to choose from.

Here are the odds for each category:
Mythic: 1 in 200
Uber: 1 in 24
Rare: 1 in 7
Uncommon 1 in 3

So as an example, I first pick a random number between 1 and 200. If the random number picked is equal to 1, then bingo, the Mythic category is used as the pool. If it's not 1, then I proceed to Uber Rare. I pick another random number, between 1 and 24 this time. If it's equal to 1, then bingo, the Uber Rare category is chosen. This proceeds until I get a number 1 in the random roll. If none of the categories result in the number 1, then the Common pool is chosen.

Once a category pool is chosen, a random image is selected from that pool.

If the image chosen was not excluded, then that's the image you are shown.

Since you can only exclude images you've seen at least once, this still gives you the chance to see new images, even if you've excluded all others.

If the image was excluded, then it instead picks a random image from any of the images (from any category) that you HAVENT excluded.

This means that if you love the owl and exclude every other image, then even if the category pool isn't Uber Rare, if you've exlucded what is picked then you'll end up seeing the Owl because it's the only one you didn't exclude.

This allows you to see your favorite images, much more often. I figure that you've earned them, you should be able to see them more often :)

If you've excluded every single image, it will fall back to the "You Win" image.

Now, the way I calculated the percentage, I ran through the above procedure 1 million times, keeping track of how many times each category of image ends up being chosen and then using that as the percentage chance to see that category. The reason I have to simulate like this, instead of just using the "1 in 200" or "1 in 24" stat, is because the "1 in 24" is only evaluated if the Mythic fails, thus the odds are not exactly "1 in 24".

I hope this all makes sense :)

Maryellen said...

Thanks for the reply, Robert. The new update sounds like it will be fun, and I expect that people will do a lot of different things with their new ability to exclude images. Because part of the appeal of the game is the variety of victory images, and part of the appeal of an image can be its rarity, I bet you'll get requests for more images after people start excluding some and reducing the variety that they see.

Robert said...

@Maryellen

Aye, victory images are quite popular :)

I plan on putting the big update live in January.

Once that's done I'll be working with some artists to get more victory images made :)
